Is painting always a performance, or only when someone is watching?

In June 2024 I participated in The Sky Arts show "Landscape Artist of the Year”. The series features artists competing in a timed painting challenge to win a prize commission from The Courtauld Gallery. We were located by a disused slate quarry in Llanberis, Wales.

Making the show was an amazingly layered experience that shifted between performance, prompts, responses, interruptions, repetitions and intense scrutiny. I became hyper aware of sound and the way I speak, look and make marks. It was a phenomenal experience!
